Shared repairs in Edinburgh tenements

The council explains that if you own a flat in a tenement, or upper and lower villa, you and your fellow owners are responsible for the upkeep of the common or shared areas in or around the building, as well as maintaining your own home.

Free help from the council

The Edinburgh Shared Repairs Service offers private owners free advice on organising repairs to shared areas. That includes a helpline (0131 529 6778), a tenement toolkit of templates and checklists, and a Missing Shares Service. Through that service, the council can consider paying a missing owner's share of a repair bill and recovering it from them. Council tenants should use the council's repair request service instead.

Emergencies

If a building is unsafe, see the council's page on unsafe buildings and emergency repairs.
